Monkey King Part III - Monkey’s Magic Dance - Jumping Buddha’s Palm
Monkey acquires the knowledge of great magic and becomes so powerful that he achieves immortality and rivals the gods. He revels in his power and names himself
Great Sage Equal of Heaven. Tiring of Monkey’s audacity, Buddha proposes a wager: If Monkey can jump off the palm of Buddha’s right hand, Monkey may claim the throne of Heaven’s Jade Emperor. But if Monkey fails, he will be punished. Monkey’s powers have allowed him to jump hundreds of miles, and with great confidence, he accepts Buddha’s challenge. As he leaps into the air, Monkey is sure that he is slowly reaching high into the heavens, perhaps even circumventing the globe in his assent. But as he descends, he realizes that he is still in Buddha’s palm. The fingers of Buddha’s right hand transform into the five elements of wu xing, becoming the five- peaked mountain Wu Xing Shan which slowly descends upon Monkey, encasing him for the next 500 years.
